Holy Resurrection Armenian Apostolic Church Performance and Book Signing

On Sunday, March 8, 2026, a meaningful and heartfelt celebration took place at Holy Resurrection Armenian Apostolic Church, honoring the 115th birthday of Alan Hovhaness. The event brought together members of the Armenian community, musicians, and friends for a special afternoon that also included a book blessing and signing for Alan Hovhaness: Unveiling One of the Great Composers of the 20th Century. It was a gathering rooted in remembrance, music, and cultural pride—celebrating not only the composer’s legacy but also the man behind the music.

The program was graciously hosted by Franz Badoyan, who offered a warm and insightful introduction, setting the tone for the afternoon. His thoughtful commentary throughout the event helped guide attendees through both the musical selections and the deeper significance of Hovhaness’s life and work.

A highlight of the celebration was the series of performances by talented local Armenian musicians, each bringing their own interpretation and emotional depth to Hovhaness’s compositions and related works. Pianist Armine Naghdyan performed Love Song vanishing into sounds of Crickets, a piece that captured a sense of quiet beauty and introspection. Anahit Naghdyan followed with Mystic Flute and Macedonian Mountain Dance, offering a dynamic contrast of lyrical mysticism and rhythmic vitality.

Alisa Sargsyan (piano) and Gayane Grigoryan (violin) delivered a moving performance of Oror, a traditional Armenian lullaby that resonated deeply with the audience. The Armenian Church Choir added a sacred dimension to the program with their performance of Pahapan Amenayni, filling the sanctuary with reverence and spiritual warmth.

Following the musical program, Bill Holst shared a brief but personal reflection on the inspiration and purpose behind his book. Drawing from the stories and memories passed down by his mother, Hinako Hovhaness, he offered attendees a glimpse into the deeply human side of the composer—beyond his prolific body of work.

The afternoon concluded with a special blessing led by Der Vazgen Boyajyan, who offered prayers and heartfelt wishes for the success and impact of the memoir. His words brought a fitting and spiritual close to an event that seamlessly blended music, memory, and community.

Altogether, the celebration served as a powerful tribute to Alan Hovhaness’s enduring legacy—one that continues to inspire audiences and musicians around the world.
