University of Michigan Student Transcription Project of Symphony No. 63 Loon Lake

Michigan-based composer Peter Cohn is currently working on an arrangement of Alan Hovhaness’s Symphony no. 63 “Loon Lake”, which will become available for programming and performances within the next couple of concert seasons.  The transcription project seeks to expand Hovhaness’s wind band repertoire and to expand opportunities for his music to be performed and heard in educational spaces.

Peter Cohn is currently studying music composition and music theory at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance, and is excited to use his experience in wind bands as both a performer and a composer to bring the vivid colors and textures of Hovhaness’s Symphony no. 63 to life in a different idiom.

The transcription, which will cover the full scope of the original Hovhaness symphony, will be scored for a full wind ensemble, and offer ample opportunities for solos, especially in the piccolo, flute, and English horn parts, all of which contain the expressivity emblematic of Hovhaness’s style.

Interested groups please monitor the Alan Hovhaness Music website for updates on Peter’s transcription project of Symphony No. 63 “Loon Lake”. Comments are welcomed.
